The weather started rainy but sunshine broke out and we had a great day despite several windy gusts!. The afternoon was truly spectacular, with live music, handmade crafts, rowing 'tasters', and activities for kids. Read More Lightning Storm![]() John Swan's superb photo of the incredible lightning storm over Dunbar on Friday evening, 27th July! A spectacular storm that passed over in one hour. Click photo for full effect.
The Homecoming![]() ‘Homecoming’, a theatre production in our Battery took place on Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd July. There were stories and songs, drawing inspiration from the Dunbar Battery’s history as a World War 1 hospital and its location close to the former Dunbar Barracks, through which thousands of men passed on their way to the Front. Read More The Three Craws![]() The Battery has seen several events; here is Rita Bradd playing harp and The Three Craws entertaining the children with funny stories of Dunbar's coastline, birds and scary bogles. Ten performances in July and August, from the Three Craws series of plays by Rita Bradd. Lifeboat Day in hot, sunny weather![]() Lifeboat Day, 14th July, in hot, sunny weather. Well done to the willing volunteers who helped; the parade, tombola, donation-buckets, stalls, music, classic bikes, too many to list. This year saw the gate-takings rise to £4832, which is believed to be a new record. The new Lifeboat Queen, Beth Mackay, was crowned and Dunbar toasted the RNLI crew. Well done all! Read More Chalk Painting Workshop![]() Chalk Painting Workshop July 21st. Epic Chalk Day in Dunbar Harbour. All materials and chalk was provided. This was a free family event to chalk up the harbour with live music and face painting. The day was a triumph! There was a great take-up for the chalk drawings by children (and adults who lied about their ages!). Later everyone was so grateful for the effective clean-up.
Cellardyke Queen and Orkney Flag![]() On 14th July, Bob Clunas's fifie 'Marean' had the great honour of carrying the Cellardyke Sea Queen at the 70th Anniversary of the first Sea Queen Ceremony, with the crowning of the new Sea Queen, Katie Morris. Starting at Anstruther harbourside, the Sea Queen sent a fleet of historic boats off to Cellardyke Harbour, this was followed by a procession along the streets meeting lots of characters from the town's past, to Cellardyke where the Queen was crowned. Read More Coastal Plants![]() Sea holly, seen here in the Battery, thanks to recent replanting. The range of coastal plants, which were planted by local volunteers, are thriving despite the recent hot weather.
RNLI Ramp Extension![]() The RNLI has proposed a ramp extension under the harbour bridge. The area under the bridge was surveyed in April. This project is now moving along and is intended to provide a much-needed, improved slipway/ramp to make launching and recovering the lifeboat safer at low tide. Read More Kittiwake Chicks![]() Our pretty kittiwakes have started producing their first checks during the first week of July. Over recent years many adults have moved their nests from the eastern side of the castle wall to the western side, with some nesting on the northern side. These elegant birds will depart towards the end of August and return next year (with this year's chicks heading for the cold North Atlantic and returning in two years time to nest and mate).
